Are You From Here?

What it is & Why It Works

This activity provides a playful and meaningful way for couples and empty nesters to explore their local area, connect with their surroundings, and bond with one another. This holiday-themed scavenger hunt encourages curiosity, conversation, and a deeper appreciation for where you live. It’s a perfect opportunity to unplug from technology, enjoy time together, and learn something new about your community.

HOW TO PLAY

1. Plan Your Adventure. Create a list of local landmarks and activities to explore. Choose places with history, charm, or local significance (cemeteries, farms, murals, unique stores, historical markers, etc.).

2. Print Out or Write Down Your List of Spots. This will help you avoid distractions by avoiding phones. If needed, ask locals for suggestions before your adventure begins!

3. Add An Extra Challenge: Race the clock to complete as many tasks as possible in one afternoon!

Scavenger Hunt Checklist / Suggested Conversation Prompts:

Local Landmarks & History:

1. Visit the oldest tombstone in the local cemetery. Write down the person’s name and what year they passed to research later.

2. Find a historical marker in town and read it aloud to your partner.

3. Take a photo at a local statue, mural, or public art piece. Discuss what you think it represents.

Local Culture & Connection:

1. Talk to a local resident and ask: “What’s your favorite thing about living here?” or “How long have you lived in this town?”

2. Visit a small business or farm store and pick out a locally made item.

Animals & Nature:

1.  Find a picture or statue of an animal (bonus if it’s unique to the area) and take a picture with it.

2. Spot the most festive holiday decorations and snap a memory together.

Food & Community Favorites:

1. Stop by a local diner, bakery, or coffee shop. Ask the staff what their most popular item is and try it!

2. Find a park or gathering space and talk about what it would’ve been like to meet here 20 years ago.

Wrap-Up:

At the end of the adventure, sit down with a warm drink to reflect on what you discovered. What was surprising? What did you enjoy most? You could even turn the day into a mini scrapbook by saving notes, photos, or small souvenirs. This activity encourages exploration, conversation, and discovery. By participating in the scavenger hunt together, couples share experiences that deepen their appreciation for their community—and each other. It creates opportunities for connection through storytelling, shared curiosity, and fun challenges.
