Regenerative Ranching at Big Bluff Ranch with Tyler Dawley

At Pederson's Farms, we are committed to using natural and sustainable methods to raise our animals and care for the land. Tyler Dawley of Big Bluff Ranch, who shares those same standards and values, joined the podcast to discuss how he puts those values into practice at Big Bluff Ranch.

Welcome to Big Bluff Ranch

Big Bluff Ranch is a family-owned and operated ranch located in Northern California. In the Dawley family since 1960, the ranch has been passed down through generations. The ranch is situated in the Sacramento Valley, a couple of hours north of Sacramento, and four hours north of the Bay Area. In the 1980s, Tyler's father discovered Allan Savory and his principles of holistic management, which have since been implemented on the ranch.

The Basics of Holistic Management

Holistic management is a method of managing land and animals that mimics the natural grazing patterns of large herds of wild animals. Fences are used instead of walls to move the animals around the ranch, giving the plants time and space to recover. Allowing the plants to recover promotes the health of the soil and the plants. This method of management has proven to have a positive effect on the health of the land and the animals.

The Rewards of Regenerative Ranching

At Big Bluff Ranch, implementing regenerative ranching practices has led to several rewards. One of the most significant rewards is that native perennials have returned to the land. With their return has come an increase in biodiversity and a healthier ecosystem on the ranch. Additionally, because the soil is healthier, the animals have access to better-quality food and are becoming healthier, too! The benefits of regenerative ranching extend beyond the ranch, leading to healthier food for the community and a more sustainable future for agriculture.

Big Bluff Ranch is an example of how regenerative ranching can be implemented successfully. The methods and principles used by Allan Savory have proven to be beneficial not only for the land and the animals but also for the community.
